So far it has handled 4', 8', and 10' of snow. It seems have enough power to allow me to walk through snow up to 8' with little problem.
This model is not self-propelled, but the auger does assist and seems to pull the blower along. I found it starts easier when I hit the red primer button 10-12 times, not 5-7 as recommended. Also it starts better without applying the choke. It's a good little blower for a residential setting, though I am clearing a 30'x30' driveway. Comments about MTD 21in Single Stage Snow Thrower (31A-2M1E700): I left gas in last year during the summer and while it started in the summer it didn't last winter. I have the carb replaced and the dealer then told me to use non ethanol unleaded which hot rodders buy in the summer.
This gas can be purchased by some Sinclair Stations and a couple other stations in the cities. Sinclair has the 87 Octane in a few of their stations some of the other stations have 92 Octane non ethanol. Make sure the machine has a good pull cord and the eye-bolt is tightened fully other wise you will need to replace it after a heavy snow season like the last two years before this one.
Cleaning the sidewalk it is a wonderful machine. And like most others you need to clean the center and then both sides. You may need to clean the discharge chute if you have slushy snow but unless you stop often that shouldn't be a problem. The machine is quieter than most others.
IT would be nice to know where to have it repaired should something go wrong. I lived in Macalester-Groveland and had to take it to a Hardware in Little Canada to get it fixed and tuned. Because ACE, wasn't equipped to do so last year.
That may have changed. I cleaned the plowed snow from the alley truck and the stuff the city through on hte sidewalk after I cleaned the 10 inches that fell. Comments about MTD 21in Single Stage Snow Thrower (31A-2M1E700): I bought one of these Yard Machine products. They were having a $50 off sale and so I snatched one up in the early season. We have had a few snowstorms recently in the Chicagoland area including a 1 ft storm yesterday. For the money, I'm really impressed with this machine.
I followed the instructions when I got the machine. I filled the oil appropriately and then put in gasoline a few days before I was going to use it. The blower started up after a pumps of the primer and setting the choke. The machine works great on fluffy dry snow as most do.
When the snow gets wet it gets more difficult. I had to manhandle it a big to get it to chew through a wet snowbank from the street plow.
It was able to get through it, but it did stall out a few times. For a single stage thrower, I'm pretty happy. The price was right. It has breezed through my small driveway, walks and sidewalks. I would definitely buy again.
We'll see the reliability as the season goes on. Comments about MTD 21in Single Stage Snow Thrower (31A-2M1E700): I love this little machine, mine is 4 years old (the previous model) In south jersey we got hammered two winters in a row with record amounts of snow. We are close enough to the ocean to pick up the extra moisture and far enough from the ocean for low temps. This resulted in a couple of snowzilla's. My little snowblower took care of it with ease.
When there are 10 inches on the ground I make my first run and finish it of after it stops snowing. Starts on the first pull, always. It is extremely easy to handle, my wife uses it when it snows and I am at work.
The only con is that my electric starter does not work but since the pull is reliable even that would not take away a star. Comments about MTD 21in Single Stage Snow Thrower (31A-2M1E700): Works real well on pavement. The problem I have had is the left wheel sits to close the the metal housing (you can see in the photo). Snow will stick to the wheel and stop the wheel from turning.
Very hard to push the unit when it happens and annoying when you have to stop every few feet. Usually happens when the snow is to deep for the blower and your not clearing all the way to the pavement or you use on gravel.
Other than that, this thing makes snow removal fun.
